Old-timey action-platformer game

Momodora I is an indie game developed by rdein. The first title in the Momodora series, this game features a challenging arcade-style similar to old games, such as Cave Story and Mega Man. It follows the story of an orphan girl named Isadora, who goes into a forbidden land in search of a fabled item. The item is said to have the power to resurrect the dead, and Isadora wants it to bring back her mother, who was sacrificed.

Venture into the unknown

The gameplay for Momodora I is very simple yet fluid. It involves platforming and is mainly about avoiding obstacles while simultaneously fighting enemies. There will be several weapons throughout the game, which can be found inside the dungeon. None of the weapons require ammunition and all of them have no cooldown. With this, Isadora can attack as fast as you can press the attack key. There is a total of five primary weapons, which you can switch at any time.

Aside from the weapons, there are also several collectible items. Each of the items gives a brief description—not just about them but about events or inhabitants of the land, as well. Players will also need to find the crystals within the game to save their progress or replenish their health.  They need to walk past these crystals to gain their powers. Upon death, the player will be sent back to the main menu, where they can load the game from the last save crystal.

Momodora I doesn't provide much information about the characters, the world, and events. Sure, there is an introduction and some character conversations, but you will pretty much venture to an unknown land. Throughout the game, you can obtain some information from the short descriptions of the collectible to help you understand the forbidden land better.

Decent but not amazing

All things considered, Momodora I is a decent old-timey action-platformer. It has good gameplay and nice art. It is also not that long, so it doesn’t overstay its welcome. However, it is just not that amazing as compared with other games in the genre. The premise is nothing new, and sometimes it can be more frustrating than fun. Despite this, if you feel like playing games inspired by classic arcade games, this is worth checking out.

PROS

  • Nice art
  • Simple gameplay
  • No cooldown and no ammunition needed for the weapons

CONS

  • Does not offer new features
  • Does not support any controllers natively
  • Some trouble in running the game
